Taylor Ward is not in the starting lineup for Friday’s bout against the Orioles.
Ward will get a rare day off to open the series against Baltimore. The 31-year-old will get a break with LaMonte Wade Jr. handling left field and hitting seventh against Charlie Morton and the O’s.
Gunnar Hoglund will likely miss the rest of the 2025 season after undergoing hip surgery on Friday.
Hoglund was diagnosed with a hip impingement, and he won’t be an option for the A’s for the remainder of the 2025 campaign. He ends his rookie season with a 6.40 ERA over 32 1/3 innings accrued over six starts. He could be an option at the back of the A’s rotation in 2026.
Jacob Wilson (hamstring) is hitting second and playing shortstop against the Royals on Friday.
Wilson missed a couple of games with his hamstring tightness, but as expected, the star rookie is good to go for the series against the Royals beginning Friday.
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo told reporters that Justin Martinez will miss 12-13 months with the UCL sprain in his right elbow.
Martinez was diagnosed with his sprain Tuesday, and while the 23-year-old is awaiting a second opinion, the Diamondbacks still have ruled out the right-hander for the rest of this season and a large portion of 2026, as well. The question will be whether or not Martinez will undergo surgery and what type of operation it would be, but he won’t be a high-leverage option for Arizona for a while, at best.
On a recent appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, ESPN’s Shams Charania said, “I think a Kevin Durant trade could happen in the next few days.”
Who knows what to believe at this point. A Thursday update from Arizona Sports 98.7 FM’s John Gambadoro noted that a Durant trade was “not close,” but Shams and Brian Windhorst have been consistent over the last week, reporting the trade as imminent. Shams’ most recent report links Durant most closely to the Rockets, Heat and Timberwolves.
Drew Waters is not in the starting lineup for Friday’s game against the Athletics.
This will make back-to-back games against right-handed pitchers that Waters isn’t starting. The 26-year-old begins Friday’s game on the bench with Nick Loftin hitting seventh and playing left field.
