2024 Player Outlook
During his first season under Broncos head coach Sean Payton and offensive coordinator, Joe Lombardi, Wilson finished as QB15 with 3,070 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, 341 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. Not a bad showing considering he was learning a new offense on a struggling team, but he was never really in their rebuild plans and considering how much money he was owed, the Broncos thought it best to bench him late in the season to avoid injury and try to deal him. With no takers, Denver ultimately released him in March and ate the $85M dead-cap hit. He quickly signed with the Steelers and is expected to start, despite the team's trade for Justin Fields. The 35-year-old could be a decent fit for Arthur Smith's offense as it is a run-heavy scheme designed to open things up further downfield. Last season, Wilson ranked third in the NFL with 12.6-percent of his passes going at least 20 yards, so if he can get protection from his offensive line, he should be usable in superflex formats. He does have a tendency to hold the ball for too long which results in a lot of sacks and check-downs, but in this scheme, the check-downs are likely to be his best friend.

Giants GM Joe Schoen said drafting a quarterback isn’t “mandatory” after signing Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston.
Adding two journeyman quarterbacks won’t prevent the Giants from drafting a quarterback, but it at least gives them emergency options if they strike out on draft night. New York currently holds the No. 3 overall pick. Shedeur Sanders has a private workout with them this week and remains a candidate for their first-round selection. The Giants also have private workouts with Tyler Shough and Jalen Milroe lined up. Neither player is expected to be drafted inside the top five, but the Giants could be eying a quarterback with pick No. 34. Russell Wilson can be penciled in as the Week 1 starter for now, but he’s far from a safe bet to make all 17 starts.
The Athletic’s Dan Duggan believes that Russell Wilson’s $2 million base salary makes him “eminently tradable” if things don’t go well for the Giants in 2025.
Duggan admits this is just connecting dots rather than firm reporting, but that the Giants giving Wilson’s contract a huge up-front signing bonus is not their “typical” structure on deals. In the same article, it is mentioned that Jameis Winston said that he could have “that starter-bridge opportunity in the future” with the Giants. We’re pretty sure nobody was actively believing in returning fantasy value out of the Giants quarterback room this year anyway, but in case you’re in a deep enough league where it matters, it sure sounds like Wilson could be shipped out at the trade deadline.
Russell Wilson said he expects to be the Giants’ starting quarterback.
Wilson signed with the Giants on Tuesday, inking a one-year deal with $10.5 million guaranteed. Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the deal is loaded with incentives. Russ can make up to another $10.5 million via a variety of incentives and escalators. Because of this, the Giants’ front office likely told Wilson he would get the first crack at the starting gig when he signed. Wilson is joined by Tommy DeVito and fellow free agent addition Jameis Winston on the roster. Winston is on a two-year deal and is being paid like a backup while DeVito’s time in the spotlight should be over. Barring a surprise via the 2025 NFL Draft, Wilson should be penciled in as the Giants’ Week 1 starter.
Giants signed QB Russell Wilson, formerly of the Steelers, to a one-year, $21 million contract.
Wilson has found a suitor in the Giants, signing a one-year deal worth up to $21 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal also includes $10.5 million guaranteed. The Giants were in the market for a veteran quarterback and now have two after also signing Jameis Winston. The dominos will continue to fall as the Steelers are still without a quarterback, though Aaron Rodgers seems destined for Pittsburgh despite the snail-like speed of his free agency decision. Meanwhile, Wilson is now poised to start for the Giants in 2025 after throwing for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions in 11 games for the Steelers last season. The ceiling for Malik Nabers and the Giants’ pass-catchers is lower with Wilson than Winston and the addition of the two veteran quarterbacks indicates the team will either pick a rookie to sit the entire 2025 season, or wait until the 2026 draft to add a rookie quarterback.
