2025 Player Outlook
Donovan’s revamped swing has led to increased power numbers for the 28-year-old left-handed hitter, and he posted career highs last season in home runs (14), ISO (.140), launch angle (13.2), and fly ball rate (36.9%). He may not be a prototypical cleanup hitter, but that’s the role he’ll likely occupy to begin the 2025 season. All of his power came against RHP last season, but while it may not come with much thump behind it, he did hit southpaws at a.259 clip with an 89 wRC+. There are some questions with this St. Louis offense, but Donovan is guy who should reach 15 home runs for the first time in his career in 2025, while swiping 5-10 bags with a .275-ish batting average, all while carrying dual positional eligibility (2B/OF). Donovan will do a little bit of everything for your team, and he’s routinely drafted outside of the top 45-50 outfielders. Solid value here.
Player News
Brendan Donovan is out of the Cardinals lineup for the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader against the Red Sox.
It’s the first time this season that he’s sat. He’ll surely be back in there for the nightcap, but the recently recalled Thomas Saggese will get the nod against a lefty this afternoon.
Brendan Donovan went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI in Friday’s loss to the Red Sox.
Four hard-hit balls for Donovan today. He has two homers and four barrels in seven games. Over his first three seasons, he averaged a homer every 12 games and a barrel every seven games.
John Denton of MLB.com reports that Brendan Donovan lost his arbitration hearing against the Cardinals and will be paid $2.85 million in 2025.
Donovan and his camp filed at $3.3 million. There were earlier reports that the 28-year-old was nearing an extension with the Cardinals back in January, and it’s unknown how this will affect — if at all — that possibility.
MLB.com’s John Denton reported that Brendan Donovan and the Cardinals “are close to signing a multi-year deal.”
The two sides are hoping to reach a deal before today’s deadline for teams and players to submit 2025 salaries for arbitration. Denton mentioned that the Cardinals “are handling Brendan Donovan much the way they did Tommy Edman last year.” Edman signed a two-year, $16.5M extension last season to avoid arbitration, so perhaps something similar is coming for Donovan.
