The Rays picked up Yandy Diaz’s $12 million option for 2026 and added a vesting option for 2027.
Diaz, 33, will see the 2027 option vest if he hits specific performance thresholds next year. The first baseman was the subject of several trade rumors this winter — and this move doesn’t guarantee he won’t be dealt before the end of the season — but for now he’ll hit at the top of the Tampa Bay lineup.
Yandy Díaz is on the bench for Thursday’s game against the Tigers.
This is now the second straight game that Díaz has been on the bench. With the Rays eliminated from playoff contention, it’s fair to wonder if Diaz, who has played in 143 games this year, will be rested for the remainder of the season. Fantasy managers counting on Díaz for the remainder of the season should have a backup plan just in case.
Yandy Díaz is starting at designated hitter and batting third for the Rays on Thursday.
After getting one game off on Thursday, Díaz be back in the lineup but will be hitting third with Dylan Carlson starting in left field and batting lead-off against Brayan Bello and the Red Sox.
Yandy Diaz is not in the starting lineup Wednesday against the Red Sox.
Diaz will get a break for the Wednesday affair against Boston. Jonathan Aranda will get the start and hit fourth while Diaz rests.
