Kuhl bolsters Atlanta’s organizational relief depth after struggling to a bloated 5.06 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 54/25 K/BB ratio across 53 1/3 innings (31 appearances) last year out of the White Sox’ bullpen. The 32-year-old journeyman righty has made 174 appearances (117 starts) in the big leagues dating back to 2016.

Kuhl was designated for assignment on Saturday. He’ll get a little hard start on free agency now.

Kuhl has been one of the White Sox’s most trusted relievers, but that didn’t earn him a chance to finish out the year with the team. He wound up with a 5.06 ERA in 53 1/3 innings, all of which came after June 16.

Jon Singleton homered off him, but it wasn’t enough in a two-run game. Kuhl’s previous save came with the Nationals last year. He was the choice in the ninth tonight despite giving up five runs in his last appearance against the Yankees. He might remain the choice going forward, but even those desperate for saves probably ought to stay away. The save tonight was the first for the White Sox since Michael Kopech got his last for the team on July 10.
