Jason Heyward hit a solo blast to help the Padres to a win over the Rockies on Saturday.
Jason Heyward smacked a three-run triple on Thursday night, leading the Rangers to a 5-3. victory over the Rangers in Cactus League action.
Heyward opened the scoring in the contest with his bases-clearing three-run triple off of Adrian Houser in the second inning. He then trotted home as Elias Diaz singled into center field. He struck out in each of his other two plate appearances in the contest, finishing the night 1-for-3. Heyward is off to a slow start this spring, hitting just .143 (4-for-28) with zero homers and six RBI.
Padres signed OF Jason Heyward to a one-year, $1 million contract.
The deal, which includes an additional $250,000 in performance-related bonuses, is now official. Heyward heads to San Diego to help shore up their glaring lack of corner outfield depth. He’ll compete with Connor Joe and prospect Tirso Ornelas for at-bats between left field and DH. The 35-year-old veteran’s days as a fantasy-relevant contributor are probably in the rearview mirror, but he represents a legitimate upgrade for the Padres. He bounced around last year between the Dodgers and Astros, batting .211/.288/.412 with 10 homers and five steals across 258 plate appearances over 87 games.
The Athletic’s Dennis Lin reports the Padres are signing Jason Heyward.
The Padres were busy on Friday, agreeing to contracts with both Heyward and Connor Joe. Lin notes that the plan is for Heyward and Joe to platoon in left field, with the 35-year-old Heyward set to see strong side at-bats. He’s coming off of a brutal year at the plate in which he slashed a woeful .211/.288/.412 with 10 homers and 37 RBI in 258 plate appearances between the Dodgers and Astros. The chances of him suddenly returning to fantasy relevancy are small, but stranger things have happened.
