I’ll tell you what, this wrap around schedule still throws me off. I should be used to it by now but it’s still crazy to me that golf is considered a year round sport but here we are in mid-November breaking down another event. The benefit of this time of year is you get to see more of the young players and grinders on the PGA Tour before the meat of the season begins. Most of these players are on the lower tier having to grind through the fall and winter while the top dogs can pick and choose the events they wish to attend, usually because of sponsorship responsibilities.
The RSM Classic will be the last full field event of the 2021 calendar year. The only events remaining before we ring in 2022 is the Hero World Challenge and the QBE Shootout. Both of those events have small fields with no cuts..
This tournament is played on two courses at the Sea Island Golf Club. First, we have the Seaside course which is a par 70 and measures out to just 7,005 yards from the championship tees. Then the Plantation course, a par 72, that stretches out to 7,060 yards. Both of these courses are played on really fast Bermuda grass and they are true ocean tracks on the southern tip of the island. You’ll see all the traditional links course staples like ocean vistas, tidal creeks, dunes and salt marshes throughout the course. Each of the players will play both the Plantation and Seaside courses over Thursday and Friday but then the tournament will be decided on the Seaside course over the weekend.
When you have short tracks like these, accuracy is usually the first thing I’m looking for when selecting my players. The history of success at the RSM has not shown distance off the tee to be as important as other statistical markers. For example, I will look closely at Strokes Gained: Approach and Scrambling. We want these guys to fire the ball in there nice and tight but when they do miss, they need to be able to get themselves out of trouble. These players will go low this weekend, the winners over the last three years have all been 19 under par. The factors I’ll be looking at when picking players this weekend, course history, current form, Strokes Gained: Approach, Greens in Regulation, Birdie or Better Percentage, Scrambling, and Strokes Gained: Putting.
The weather looks to be pretty good this weekend with weather in the mid to upper 60s. There is no rain in the forecast but we will see wind and it will be a factor. We could see gusts into the 20s early in the week. I definitely target players who have a good history on island and windy courses.
Good luck this weekend.

G | Webb Simpson | 10700 | 25.2% | 11900 | 29.6% |
He has been to the RSM seven times with three Top 10 finishes. He’s a big fan of Sea Island. The 2020-2021 season was not great for Webb, and thus far more of the same in 2021-2022. He has one Top 15 finish in three starts but I think things turn around this weekend. We know he thrives on and around the greens with premiere ball striking skills. Play him without fear. G | Cameron Smith | 10300 | 18.3% | 11800 | 17.7% |
Who doesn’t love a guy with a mullet? Cam is one of my personal favorite golfers on tour. He’s one of the more consistent players and seems to always be there on the biggest stages. He has one finish outside the Top 30 in his last six starts. He comes into this event after a Top 15 last week in Houston. Cam has never played here but he knows how to play on an island being from Australia. He’s Top 20 in Strokes Gained Approach and Putting this season. Game Type: CASH & GPP
G | Corey Conners | 9900 | 21.6% | 11500 | 25.4% |
You all know how much I love this Canadian’s game. He is an extremely talented ball striker but putting has been his Achilles heel. While putting is important every weekend, he can overcome it on Sea Island and has with a Top 10 and a Top 25 in his two previous trips. He’s missed just one cut since the beginning of March (US Open). He finished last season Top 10 in Strokes Gained Off the Tee and Approach and also Top 20 in Greens in Regulation. Game Type: CASH & GPP
G | Russell Henley | 9600 | 19.1% | 11300 | 22.7% |
He paid off for us last weekend and I’m going to ride the hot hand into Georgia. He is currently number one on tour in Strokes Gained: Approach and 8th in Greens in Regulation. This former Georgia Bulldog loves to play at home with 3 Top 10 finishes in seven trips to the RSM. Henley’s got 3 Top 25s in his first four events this season. Game Type: CASH & GPP
G | Kevin Kisner | 9200 | 13.2% | 10700 | 15.6% |
He will likely be the highest owned player on the board this weekend. Kisner has played in this event 8 times with a win and four other Top 10 finishes. He won at the Wyndham at the end of the 2020-2021 season but he’s been hit or miss with the cut line since then. He will never be long off the tee but always accurate and strong around the greens. Easy cash game play. Game Type: CASH & GPP
G | Max Homa | 8700 | 12.5% | 10300 | 22.0% |
I really like him for the price tag. When you look at the level of talent in this field, he’s one of the better overall players. Max already won this season at the Fortinet. He is a premiere ball striker finishing last season Top 40 in Strokes Gained Approach. He missed the cut in his three previous trips to Sea Island but his last appearance was 2018 and I feel he’s a much better player now. I think you’ll get a good ownership percentage. Game Type: GPP
G | Mackenzie Hughes | 8600 | 13.5% | 10000 | 10.2% |
Hughes had improved his finish each week that he’s started this 2021-2022 PGA Tour season until last week’s 29th in Houston. Finished 35th at the Sanderson Farms, 25th at the CJ CUP and then 4th at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP. That’s all while not putting up to his typical standard (finished Top 20 last season). While he hasn’t had a lot of success at this event, I believe in his skill set on this course. Game Type: GPP
G | Matt Kuchar | 7900 | 5.8% | 9600 | 4.9% |
Man, where has Kuch gone? He has basically been non existent on the leaderboard since the beginning of the pandemic. He’s started this season with three straight cuts made and has improved his finish in each of the three starts. He’s made the cut on Sea Island five of his seven trips with one Top 10 finish. The price tag is just too tasty on Kuchar with this field to pass on him this weekend. Game Type: CASH & GPP
G | Brendon Todd | 8400 | 3.5% | 10400 | 3.1% |
Here’s another guy who hasn’t made an appearance in the playbook in awhile. There are very few events that I really like his skill set but here is one and it’s proven out in his results. Todd has made the cut in five of his six trips with a Top 5 in 2019. He comes in this weekend on the heels of an 11th place finish at the Mayakoba. This Georgia Bulldog is consistently a Top 10 putter and accurate driver on the PGA Tour. Game Type: CASH & GPP
G | Brian Harman | 7800 | 13.3% | 9800 | 10.0% |
It has not been a great start to the 2021-2022 season for this Georgia Bulldog (notice a trend). He’s missed two cuts and finished higher than 50th in his other two starts. That is not going to deter me from starting him at the RSM. He has made the cut in 5 of his 8 trips to Sea Island with two Top 10s and a Top 15 finish. While his early season stats don’t show it, he’s one of the better pitchers and putters on tour. Game Type: CASH & GPP
G | Jason Day | 7600 | 2.1% | 9400 | 1.8% |
Another lackluster performance at the Houston Open for Day but he did made the cut for the second straight week. I still can’t ignore his price tag. Day has been battling injuries and has only teed it up four times since his Top 15 finish at the Rocket Mortgage back in July. I’m interested in him this weekend because of his 12th place finish here last year. Game Type: GPP
G | Adam Long | 7500 | 7.0% | 9300 | 5.8% |
There are not a lot of weeks on the PGA Tour where I’m going to push Adam Long but this is one of those weeks. He has made three trips to Sea Island and made the cut twice. He has made three straight cuts heading into this weekend with an 11th in his last start at the Houston Open. He has started this season showing impressive skills on the greens ranking Top 12 in Strokes Gained: Putting. If he can continue that, he’ll be around for the weekend. Game Type: GPP
G | Robert Streb | 7500 | 6.3% | 9400 | 4.7% |
Streb won this event for the second time in 2020 with a dramatic playoff victory over Kevin Kisner. That normally would be enough to start him but he’s playing good golf right now. After missing the cut in his first start of the 2021-2022 season, he has made 4 straight with 2 Top 10 finishes including a 7th last weekend in Houston. Shot a closing round 65 to climb into the Top 10. Another guy who will never wow you off the tee but he can hit it straight (Top 10 in driving accuracy) and putt better than most in this field (Top 30 Strokes Gained Tee to Green). Game Type: CASH & GPP
G | Henrik Norlander | 7300 | 12.4% | 8800 | 13.0% |
He had to pull out last year right before the event due to COVID but he’s back and ready to go in 2021. Henrik had to be upset to miss one of his favorite spots on the calendar being an alum of Augusta University and having 2 Top 5 finishes in his last four starts at this event. Norlander is 5 for 5 in cuts made for the 2021-2022 season with a Top 5 finish at the Sanderson and a Top 20 at the ZOZO. He’s one of my favorite value plays this weekend. Game Type: CASH & GPP
G | Alex Smalley | 7100 | 6.4% | 9100 | 6.8% |
The Korn Ferry graduate has back to back Top 15 finishes at the Bermuda and Houston. This Duke Blue Devil is just playing his second season of pro golf and finding his way. The world is in front of him and he’s making the most of it thus far. He has shown skills around the greens which will be important for success this weekend. Game Type: GPP
G | Denny McCarthy | 7000 | 17.2% | 8600 | 12.7% |
Seems to be one of my favorite value options especially when the course requires a good putter. He’s flashed that putter back to back weekends finishing Top 20 at the Mayakoba and in Houston. McCarthy missed the cut at this event last year but Top 10 in 2019. It’s been a really nice start to the season for Denny, take advantage of him now in these weaker field events. Game Type: GPP
G | Wyndham Clark | 6800 | 1.3% | 8000 | 0.8% |
It’s been a solid yet unspectacular start to the 2021-2022 season for Clark. He’s made the cut in four of his five starts but just two Top 30 finishes. I like him this weekend because of his record at this event with two made cuts and a Top 25 finish last year. He is traditionally a player with a strong driver and good putting but the flat stick has failed him lately. Hopefully he finds it to make the cut at this price tag. Game Type: CASH & GPP |
