Speaking on 106.7 The Fan’s The Sports Junkies, Commanders beat writer Chris Russell said he would not be surprised if Jacory Croskey-Merritt earned RB1 snaps at some point in the season.
The Commanders haven’t had a padded practice yet, but Russell is the latest to praise Croskey-Merritt for his flashy performance early in camp. The explosive seventh-round rookie posted a 4.45 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine while also earning an 8.29 RAS. Believed by some scouts to be an early Day 3 pick in the draft, Croskey-Merritt’s fall to the seventh round may prove to be a nice value for the Commanders, whose running back room is currently led by two players on contracts set to expire at the end of this season. Brian Robinson has been a reliable RB1 for the Commanders since joining the team in 2022, but hasn’t offered much upside at the position, and Austin Ekeler is unlikely to earn anything more than a third-down role entering his age-30 season. We’ll see how he performs when the pads come on, but Croskey-Merritt could make for an interesting late-round pick in drafts if this drumbeat grows any louder.
Justin Fields (toe) returned to practice Friday.
Shortly after it was announced that Fields may practice on Friday, footage was posted of the Jets’ QB1 running on the field to start the day. Fields suffered a dislocated toe on Thursday, but appeared to be moving without a limp. For now, we’ll assume everything is good to go from here.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Justin Fields (toe) could practice on Friday.
Fields suffered a dislocated toe in Thursday’s practice, but according to Rapoport, Fields may be available to practice “in some form or fashion” on Friday. The team reported that Fields would be day-to-day with his injury, so even if he’s unable to practice on Friday, we would expect him to be back in action very soon. Tyrod Taylor will serve as the Jets’ QB1 while Fields is sidelined.
Buccaneers signed OG Michael Jordan, formerly of the Packers.
Jordan played 12 games for the Patriots last season while making 11 starts, but was released late in the year only to be claimed by the Packers. The former fourth-round pick is now set to join his fifth team in seven professional seasons. Jordan will likely need to battle for a spot on the Buccaneers’ 53-man roster, but with 40 career starts to his name, he could serve as a valuable depth piece on the roster.
Jorge Polanco hit a solo homer in a win for the Mariners on Thursday over the Angels.
Polanco’s 16th homer of the season gave Seattle a 4-2 cushion, and it came in the eighth inning off Jose Fermin. Polanco was borderline useless with the bat in May and June, but he’s now gone deep five times in July with a slash of .281/.349/.579. That’ll work.
Randy Arozarena hit a two-run homer in the Mariners’ win over the Angels on Thursday.
